Now I know that I said that I was going to do a chickadee swing feature and giveaway on the last Thursday of each month…but in my defense, I thought that today was the 30th which would make it the last Thursday. Thankfully I realized my mistake on Tuesday evening because that meant I didn’t miss an appointment that was booked a month and a half ago. Anyways.
November’s little feature is hair clips. I had been saving scraps of felt from making birthday crowns thinking that I would have something that I could do with them as well as bits of fabric from larger projects.
Then one day I decided to make a few hair clips for the girls. At the time, Cecily’s hair especially was very fine so no little clips seemed to stay in. Not to mention, my mom would stress right out because she was worried that she would put them in her mouth and choke. I started by enveloping the small clip with felt and stitching it closed.
Then I would add the flower or bird to the top. The felt cover keeps the clip in place and I make them as size that choking is not such a worry (I still would suggest supervision with babies).
Usually, I freehand design the shapes that I use (although sometimes I enlist Dan’s design creativity on the computer) and do a combination of machine sewing with hand stitched embroidery and embellishment.
I like children’s faces to be what draws ones eyes and so I generally keep my accessories on the simple side as a complementing feature. I usually offer coordinating hair accessories with the clothing that I make as well as bow ties. And might I suggest that these are fun and unique little stocking stuffers for this time of year or are great for a small party favour or gift.
Give-Away:
For the giveaway this month, I am offering a little bird hair clip that is made from 100% wool felt and features hand embroidery. And this time there will be Two winners chosen. To enter, just leave a comment saying what color of clip you would like (even if I don’t have it pictured, chances are that I have the color). The giveaway is open to all, so you don’t need to be from Canada or the USA, I am happy to mail it. On Sunday, I will draw two winners from the comments.
So, please comment and let your friends know about the give-away!

Nope, no baby yet:).
love the red and pink ones! These are just too cute!
Love the blue or the red. Every time I see a little girl in town wearing one of these it makes me smile. They are so cute
I love all the ones I ordered from you (2 I gave as gifts and 1 I kept for J) and maybe I just would wear one myself! I like the blue/teal/turquoise colors!
I think your hair clips are the most darling that I’ve seen anywhere! I never see them without wanting to buy them. 🙂 Let’s see, if I won, I think I would want red.
Hi marissa, personally, I would choose pink and purple birds. Traditionally, we’ve dressed the twins in pink and purple winter coats (and when they were really little, maren always got a pink soother and Addison the purple soother). Those would be my picks! (and, of course, I couldn’t just pick one; I’m too used to picking out things in two’s!)
Hello…this is my first time to your site….I am going to be a first time grammy in July and looking forward to buying some of your beautiful toys etc. If I won it would be blue/turquoise. thank you..
first time visiting your blog and these are lovely! love the bird in blue!
